In 1959 the Smith County Historical
Society, a non-profit organization, was founded by interested
individuals and business firms dedicated to discovering,
collecting, and preserving data, records and other items
relating to the history of Smith County. The Society meets each month to
carry on the business of the organization and the tradition of
sharing interesting programs on local and regional history. Visitor
are welcome to attend.
In the old Carnegie Public Library the now
Carnegie History Center. The building is open to the public and
is staffed with knowledgeable & helpful volunteer members.
The Society has an onsite archives containing books, records,
letters, maps, photos, audio tapes of interviews, and other
historical documents relative to Smith County. The Archives is
open at designated times for research of local history.
